My work is inspired by the details that many people manage to overlook, whether it is creating my ceramic pieces or taking photographs. In ceramics I enjoy creating textured pieces by adding or subtracting from the piece itself. In photography majority of my photographs are of people. I like to capture those brief moments where people are unaware of their surroundings and for that brief moment they can relax and be themselves.
In my ceramic artwork I create pieces with an abundant amount of texture. With the notion of texture it gives the bowl, cup, plate, sculpture or whatever I am creating either growing or deteriorating sense to it. By adding or subtracting from the ceramic body itself, I can manipulate where I want the viewer to focus on or help the viewer to look at the whole piece by placing or taking away the clay from certain areas. Also, when creating the piece itself the repetitive movement of constructing the texture is relaxing and meditative to me. My interest in texture started when I was in high school. While working with the idea of texture the more visual appealing it became.
The type of photography that I have a passion about is taking black and white street photography. I enjoy street photography because I like to document, record, and capture the brief moment where they can be themselves without worrying about the burdens of society. In this society we are told from a young age of how we have to act or how we have to behave. They are rules on how to be “normal” and if you do not act a certain way it is socially unacceptable. And because of social media we are consistently concerned on what type of person they are rather than just being themselves. I like to capture the brief moments when a person is by him or herself and can relax for a minute without the world being on their shoulders. Black and white photography interests me because it gives that sense of past life once it is successfully printed.
I like to work with what people can focus on. Rather than just walking by and looking over everything, I goal is to help the viewer to slow down and to really focus on what I have created. Whether its from ceramics to photography, I want people to slow down and enjoy what they are seeing and what is around them.
