Living in an image-saturated culture has allowed me to realize the significance of the relationship between the visual arts and the public. With the world at our fingertips we face a stream of new images every day, and at times it seems almost impossible to absorb the flood of visual information. Good design is a powerful tool in communication, and can encourage someone to pay attention to things that may otherwise be overlooked.
Exploring different forms of artmaking has always been essential to my personal growth and I am continually seeking ways to incorporate elements of studio art into my design practice. It is important to me that my hand is evident in my work. This tactile quality creates a sense of honesty and vulnerability that encourages an emotional connection with the viewer. Illustration is a means for me to investigate themes that carry both personal weight and contemporary social significance such as feminism and nature. I enjoy meditating on these subjects through narrative, often combining mundane and intimate ordinary experiences with subtle surreal aspects. By distorting line and perspective I reference sensory and long-term memory, creating dreamlike situations that are familiar yet uncanny.
I am always seeking opportunities to create alternative branding, apparel, and package design, particularly applied to the music community. This type of work gives me the opportunity to explore quirky, unusual, sometimes otherworldly subject matter, and draw from pop culture. Refusing to confine myself to one medium allows me the creative freedom to realize a project to its fullest potential. When working with clients, the medium used is dependent on the style we collaboratively are trying to achieve. This results in a range of work that is diverse and distinctive while catering to the specific project goals. I strongly believe there is a genuine need for art to be utilized in society in a way that promotes healthy dialogue about contemporary issues and inspires positive social change. Design always has an agenda. I hope to create work that resonates with a contemporary audience and adds a unique, creative perspective to everyday life.
